glo' towards your goals
It's 2018, and I know that we have said that the last few years would be our year of glo' up, but now it's really time! The beginning of the year can be frustrating and overwhelming. You're trying to plan out the rest of the year and set your goals and intentions. You may make mistakes. You may drift away from your path within the first few days. All of these things are okay-- and with my tips listed below, we'll get you right!
1. Transition slowly.
Do not rush into your routines. While the holiday season often presents a great opportunity for relaxation and comfort, it can still tend to be overwhelming at times. If you think about the proximity of the various December holidays and travel if you are going out of town, your mind can sometimes be flooded and overloaded.
I traveled over 1,000 miles home and back this winter. I visited people, spent hours with family members, and partook in a lot of fun activities. These things were pretty time-consuming, and I realized that I was trying to squeeze time out of my day to set my goals and intentions for the new year.
That wasn’t going to work, though. In order to set meaningful goals and intentions, I needed time to think clearly.
In order to gift myself some more time, I decided to take the first week of the year to relax and reflect. Ease into your 2018 routines. You don’t have to transition and transform so quickly.
2. Dream big, but remain realistic.
I want all of us to want more, but I also do not want us to sully our success by not realizing that just an ounce of progression can equate to growth. I always tell my friends that their journey will sometimes go differently than what they have originally planned, but that does not mean that they will never arrive at their final destination. Be realistic. Know that life will throw you its challenges. Know that life isn’t easy. You? You are strong, you are worth it, and you will make it.
On the topic of remaining realistic, a few weeks ago, I also wrote about the effect that social media can have on your mental health (read here), but I neglected to allude to the effects that it can have on your goals and accomplishments. Around this time, annual goals are blazoned across social media. Sometimes-- believe it or not-- this can have you doubting yourself or even dreaming about things that you may not truly want. It can also leave us feeling as though we have not accomplished nearly as much as our peers have. Remember that comparison is the thief of joy, and also remember that Rick Ross said about Birdman faux flexin':
Everything isn’t always as it appears. All that glitters ain’t gold. Stay focused on yourself.
3. Reward yourself. Have a prize for each goal.
This is pretty self-explanatory. You need to reward yourself after you accomplish a goal-- or even when you move one step closer to accomplishing said goal. This can look like a few different things. Maybe go to a fancy dinner, buy yourself that tub of ice cream, purchase a book you’ve been wanting to read, book yourself a weekend at a local hotel (Groupon, baby! We ain’t rich out here), take an evening to binge watch some shitty reality TV without feeling guilty, etc.
No matter what you choose to do, just make sure that you allow yourself to truly enjoy it while recognizing your progress!
4. Give yourself a break. It’s okay to make mistakes.
I have learned that the quickest way to discourage myself is by being too hard on myself. When it comes to my dietary goals and even writing goals, I’ve found that if I reprimanded myself too hard for eating a piece of cake or drafting away from my writing routine, it was a bit harder to jump back into things. When I told myself things such as, “Okay, hey. You messed up, and maybe you shouldn’t have ate that pan of brownies-- but there’s still time to jump back on track,” I found greater success. I also transitioned into a better rate of consistency.
5. Know the purpose of your goals.
You could list goals all day, but if you have no real connection to them then why would you possibly be committed to accomplishing them? Tie your goals to a purpose. A goal can be completed in an hour, day, week, month, or even a matter of years, but your purpose is everlasting.
Perhaps you want to lose 10 pounds. The purpose of that particular goal can be a healthier lifestyle since you know you must commit to exercising and nutritious eating in order to meet that goal and maintain.
Make sure that you know the “why” for your “what!”
Don’t be afraid to take chances this year! There are so many reasons why this world needs you and your talents. Only fear can stand in your way, but we not gon’ let it.
